The detent plates to fit a 1958 1959 1960 Thunderbird Cruise-o-matic are ready to be made. The price will be reasonable. The reproduction detent plates for the 65 Falcon/Ranchero/Comet is $24.95 (which does not fit a Thunderbird). If I make it up in a reasonable quantity, I can sell them for $20. I estimate for the padded envelope and shipping it will be another $2.

Don't let your slip out of park. Don't continue to drive a car with vague shift patterns. Replace your detent plate. It is also recommended that you replace the shift collar and shift lever for like-new shifting.

The end of the arm that goes in the detent plate gets worn and contributes to the sloppy shift and popping out of park problem. NOS levers were nearly impossible to find even in the 1980's. Before the reproductions were made, the old levers were repaired by building up the worn end by welding and then filing the weld to the correct shape.

It's been a while since I replaced my collar, bushing, and lever...can I replace the detent plate without removing all that stuff again? I can't remember what is in front of what...

I think you can leave the shift collar and the lever on. You need to remove the steering wheel to get at the chrome collar that houses the detent plate behind it. I am not sure if you can get awy not removing the turn signal to get beind the chrome collar.
