Mice !

A friend came to me yesterday, frantic, due to finding a mouse nest on the battery of his stored collectible car. He wanted to know what I use to keep them away during the winter but I never have done anything. Maybe just lucky, but I'm looking to you guys for advice. He's got moth balls under the car, peppermint oil inside the cabin and mothball "sachets" (sp?) hanging around the area but they still found their way under the hood.

Mice!

Do a search on "mice" and you will find several items, though you would not know it by the subjects that come up in the search. Check each one, and I found several posts about how to combat them. From static sheets you put in your dryer, to nice smelling fragrances, that you can put in the interior of the car, and maybe under the hood. Check out those posts that come up after searching for "mice".

Hi Mike,

I wasn't talking about doing a search on the internet, but on this Forum. There are a number of posts made regarding handling mice problems in our Tbirds. Dano has made some, and so have others. When you search for "mice" on our Forum, you will come up with a number of subjects that do NOT have anything to do with the mice subject, until you get into the posts and find what others have said about how they have combatted the mice problems.

Hey Mike!

If you have not already done so, I can save you some looking. I spent the last hour or two looking through every post that came up in the search for "mice". Only in the first few were there anything about how other members have combated the problem. The others only had the word "mice" crop up in them, in context to finding mouse nests, things like that. BUT, I learned sooo much more about our Tbirds by reading all the posts about various other subjects, like how to convert to PCV, cowl drains, and much, much more. It was interesting reading! A lot of posts by Alexander and others.

I would put a piece of cheese 10 feets away from the car and hope he choose that one instead. Having said that, in the past, Ruth have visitors as well.

Dear Birders,

Clothes dryer sheets have always worked best for me in boats and cars left for storage. They smell great and repel mice and all rodents. Don’t use mothballs as the smell will impregnate the upholstery and fabric and you’ll be smelling mothballs forever.

Here are a few other helpful suggestions;

Rodent Poison that is harmless to humans
2 ounces of barium carbonate
½ ounce of granulated sugar
½ pound of bread crumbs
Place all ingredients into a bowl and mix well. Add a small amount of water to dampen and make the mixture into small balls that can be placed out for the rodents.

Bordering on the Insane
In Cleveland, Ohio there is still an old law on the books that prohibits catching mice without a license.

The Mouse Allergy
Rodents and especially mice are allergic to oil of peppermint and will not frequent a property where they can smell it. Place a few drops of oil on a piece of cotton and place it anywhere you feel there is a mice problem. You will never see a mouse again. Use only “real” peppermint oil, not peppermint extract. Mice are also allergic to campho and pine tar.

Killer Mashed Potatoes
If you leave a bowl of potato flakes and a small bowl of water where the mice can get to them, they will eat the flakes and drink the water. The flakes will expand in their stomach and their stomachs will bust killing them.

Get a Dog
Rat Terriers were named because they are great rat catchers

Hire Some Barn Owls.
Specially built nesting boxes are available for owls and a barn owl can catch and consume up to 16 mice in one night.

Just train an army of mice to do your bidding like that old movie "Willard".

Heck, give 'em little polising cloths and train them to detail your car!

Hey guys I would agree with Jed as I have used dryer sheets for years in my cars as an inexpensive method. For some reason mice and other small rodents don't like the smell and plcaed on the floor mats won't stainanything. The other bonus is when you open the car to fire it up, it smells nice.
