I can think of numerous times in my life that I thought the valve train was making noise and it was a leaking exhaust gasket.
You can try and narrow it down:
a) to listen to the valve train, get a long screwdriver and use it like a stethoscope. Put it against your ear (plastic end) and tip on the head. If there is a noisy lifter you will know it in a couple minutes of hunting around. OR go to Autozone who I think now carries a real stethoscope
b) with it running, go around and put your hand near the exhaust manifold (note I said near). Feel for escaping gas. Look for black soot.
Suggestion: if your lifters turn out to be OK, consider adding ZDDP+ additiive to your oil each change. If you
are using 10W-30, the oil has very little if any zinc anymore and these are needed for old time "flat tappet" cams. (do a search here for several threads on this topic) A bottle is $8 from Eastwood and others. Cheap insurance. If you run 20W-50 then ignore this as zinc levels did not get lowered in that viscosity.
good luck!
