    Pertronix install

I know there have been topics on this before but just have a question. I installed the Pertronix unit on the bird with their flamethrower coil. I used the original wires to hook up to the coil, but noticed the voltage at the coil is about 6v. Should I bypass and get a full 12v for the new coil or will it be ok?

if you look in the Technical Resources Library, there is a link to a site which has all details on Pertronix installation. I believe it is consistent with what Bob said.

YES !!! The unit will work with 6, but after speaking with a rep @ the Pertronix Co. when I was going thru my little wiring nightmare with my 60, he said the unit will work @ 100 % w/12V.

I ran mine right off the switch. The whole deal took 1/2 hr.

Thanks for the info John, I think I will do the same for a full 12v. What switch did you use for the source?

I just came off of the line side of the ignition resistor(on the firewall next to the steering colum) to get 12v to the coil.Ran a new wire from the line side to the coil.14 ga. I believe.

Right off the back of the ign/switch. The "I" terminal. That sw comes out in 2 seconds. Reach back there. push it towards you from behind the dash. Turn the little bezel where the key goes with your thumb. POOF !! It's out. The terminals are marked.

In the spirit of clarification, the 58 and 59 used a ballast resistor mounted in the drivers side firewall, the 60 used a pink resistor wire from the ign switch that was routed to the engine compartment, at that point a standard wire is run to the coil. Getting 12 VDC to the coil differs depending on your model year.

Search previous posts as there is much info already posted on the resistor wire of the 60 model year.

Ken has some valuable information which depends on your year. From it, we can conclude:

                  * if you have a 58 or 59 then you can just disconnect the ballast and hook up with the lead on the Key side of it. The job can be done inside the engine compartment in mere minutes.

                  * if you have a 1960 then you need to hook in back at the Ignition Switch so you eliminate the resistor wire altogether.

In all cases, the goal is to end up with a switched, 12 V power source.

The resistor wire dosn,t go all the way to the ign. switch. Ther is 12 volts back by the stering colum. Get a volt meter and keep poking till you find 12 volts. That,s what i did for the choke on my holley.

thanks! Is there a visible joint (at the 12v- resistor interface) or does it all look the same??

                        Gentlemen,

The PERTRONIX I and II require BAT VOLT to the module and either 9V to a stock coil (via resistor) or BAT VOLT to their coil (most coils are marked as to their volt requirement) (run a 9V coil with BAT VOLT and you will burn it out).

The best way to wire this is to run a relay off of BAT VOLT and have it triggered through the IGN SW. It will give full battery voltage without having it run through the switch itself.

Also, on an electric choke (without hot air/coolant assistance), do not source 12V from any ignition circuit. It should be on a dedicated fused BAT source.

Simply install a bypass wire on the 60 so as not to damage the wiring harness for possible future dedicated restoration.

Chiquitas a 3 speed w/ electric OD.which also runs off of the load side of the resistor.Thats why I kept it in.

I ran my elec choke off the pwr/window relay.

The Pert/coil etc is off the ign/switch.
