    Front Spring Measurements

Chris ~ bird 60 sent me this information that many of you might want to use to keep your hood and trunk lid from coming down on you. In the first two pix you will see the rubber tipped rod he made for the trunk and the metal clip for the hood spring. This is an easy fix, and the trunk idea is similar to what I have used on my '59. Because I have that panel on the inside of my trunk lid, (last pic) it puts just enough weight on those springs to allow the trunk lid to come down. I happen to have an old chisel that I painted yellow to match the springs. I slip that chisel blade between the springs, and prop the other end against the trunk bed liner. This keeps the trunk lid from coming down. Chris does a similar thing. For his hood springs, he puts a metal clip between the springs and they won't go anywhere until you pull that clip out. Here is what he said and the pix that he sent me. His trunk piece is painted to match the color of his springs.

Hi RAY, These are my Stoppers that I've used for the past few years & they work great.

These are the measurements in Inches & MM.

The ROD for the TRUNK in INCHES....8" long x 1/2" Diameter with the rubber ends. (I've used mild steel.) In MM 203 Long x 12 Diameter.

The KEY for the HOOD in INCHES.....2 5/8" Long x 3/4" Wide, Groove 1 1/4" Deep x 1/4" Wide in the centre x 3/32" Thick.
    In MM.........67 MM Long x 20 MM Wide x 35 MM Groove x
7 MM Wide in the centre x 2 MM Thick. (I've used stainless steel for extra strength.)

I hope this is of use for those that have weak springs like myself. No welding, or drilling holes, easy to make & inexpensive. Best Regards, Chris

Thanks, Chris, for sending me this! This should be a big help to others who have weak springs, or have this problem when working on the car, or when it is on display and you have a wind to contend with.

Nyles ~ Tbird1044 has a new thread on Springs called A New Spring Topic. Nyles, I hope you see this. Rather than replace weak springs and the cost and effort involved to do so, you might want to consider this fix...

bit of an update for anyone interested there's a spring place in Thomastown Victoria that manufactures springs. They told me all I have to is measure the height of the spring installed in the car, and take one down and they'll make new ones. they said it would be $180 for the pair
