I just noticed that someone was asking about his engine rebuild and now I'm wondering if I should be adding a lead additive to my gas as I do not know if the vlv seats have been changed. What do you guys think? The engine runs great and I run it on the higher grade of gas. Jon

I can't say with certainty if this is correct, but a mechanic friend of mine told me that Ford always used hardened valve seats. He says GM used the soft ones and that you would have to add lead to them.Hope he's right cause I use 87 octane unleaded in my 60 and it runs good. George

On the 352 motor there are no separate valve seats from the head. They are simply a machined portion OF the head. You can have the head machined and have hardened seats inserted but the factory head has nothing separate.

RE: Add lead additive to your gas or what?
Hey Jon, I do use it. I don't know if it works but why not. I don't drive it every day. Gives me piece of mind I guess. The old ones like your dodge or my 51 ford you more or less should use lead additive. And johng is right the valve just seals against the head on the tbirds and any car that has overhead valves. and then there's the story's of lead being some left over junk they just added to get rid of it. Who knows? ...............Bill

You you don't drive the car hard, you should be alright with unleaded gas even without hardened valves or seats.
If you get a burnt valve, just get hardened valves. There is no need to put in hardened seats.
