I am trying to identify the motor that is in my 196o thunderbird. On the front of the block I found a "c2ae. Valve covers on the car say mercury on them, but I don't know if previous owner just put these on. Where else can I find marks to help identify this beast? And does the c2ae mean anything?

What motor do I have?
The C2AE tells me that you have a 1962 engine. The C tells you it is a 1960's engine, and the 2 tells you it was made in 1962. Since the 352 was in production for about 10 years, it could be a 352 or a 390. See John's comments on how to determine which it is. Here is a website that might help.

Here is another link that talks about the 352 and the 390 that might help.

Here is one with pix as to where to look for engine block stampings.

The C2AE breaks down like this:
C - 60's decade
2 - year 2
A - Ford (generic)
E - engine
You have a 1962 motor. It could be a 352 or 390. Most blocks are marked 352 even if they are a 390. The only way to tell for sure is to measure the piston stroke.

I pulled the air cleaner and found these markings
C2ae 9425c.
I do not see any markings on the side of the block saying 352. Only c2ae. I guess it's safe to say this is not the original motor since my t bird is a 1960 and the motor in it is stamped as a 1962.
Now if I were to measure the stroke how do I go about doing this. How do I find TDC for piston one? And where do I measure?Comment

I did some further surfing on other websites and found this information...
"Used on the 390, I think '62 only. It has the tall intake ports and large thermostat hole plus the oil fill tube in the front, along with the hole out the rear for the road draft tube. Performance wise, I donno, it's pretty much a flat rise.
FoMoCo factory 1962 Ford Galaxie 390 CID 330 HP Police Interceptor 4 barrel Intake Manifold. Ford part number stamped C2AE-9425-C. This unit referenced has a 2E28 date code."
