    Car History

    Hey Guys,
Can anyone tell me how to go about searching for a cars history? I would like to know who all has owned her and what dealership first sold her. Or is it impossible?

    Car History

    Hi Richard,

If you can find the Sales District Office Code on your Data Plate, or other paperwork you might have, it can tell you what District it came out of originally. Check this from the TRL.. Slide down the list until you get to the DSO listing.

Cathie just covered this subject recently. I think she said you can run your VIN # through your States DMV office and they can tell you the history on it. Prior owners, etc. I think... Maybe she will be along in a bit and educate us on this subject!

DSO regions didn't appear on the data plates till 1962 as a standard line item. The Region that our Squarebirds were destined for cannot be found from any coding contained on our cars.

I'd like to hear more about what's available from our DMV though and if it tracks the cars movement form state to state or only within our own.

I have no paper work that came with the car. She was purchased out of state. Title was sent to State of Kentucky (where I live) They registered it in this state and send a Kentucky registration for the car now. I just called or county clerks office, he advised me if the car had been originally sold in this state there would be a record. He could not advise how else I could find out any information on her.

Oddly the 55-7 Baby Birds had the dealer encoded on the data plate!! Imagine!

I tried tracing my car and another. I found that in MA the registry and insurance companies only have records back to the late '80s. Seriously! I also tried NJ and PA as I know my car spent time in those states. Essentially the same thing.

The 10 digit VIN also drives 'em nuts!! Their computer software falls over dead...

Suffice to say I was discouraged....

Its fairly straight forward....title history search

Start in the state the car is currently titled in (or was last titled in)

There's a form to download and print off and a minimal fee...

Since Richard's bird is from out of state, they will have the record going back to the original title application - it will say on it "previously titled in XX"
Then you start all over again with that state's DMV report ....it can be very time consuming but a exciting trip!

                      Thanks Cathie,
After several hours of search yesterday, I found a web site that has that request and how to proceed.
We may want to post it on Squarebirds for others if they want to see if they can find out there cars history.

This is very interesting. I thought with todays privacy laws, you could not find out the previous owners names. I am very interested in how you find out where the car was sold from. Interesting!
