    carburetor adjustment/

Yes I am having a hard time starting my thunderbird when it is cold. How do you adjust the automatic choke it seems to take forever for the throttle plate to completely open is this normal? It seems to crank over for a long time and then putters and starts running.

How wide should the choke plate be when it is cold

Should it be completely open when it is warmed up?

Thanks for your time and consideration. Any help or tips on tuning this carb is greatly appreciated it is for a 1960 thunderbird with an automatic trans and 352 engine..

Stielow............first make sure the choke tube (that long metal tube that comes off the carb) is inserted in the exhaust manifold. If its not.........or it is broke..........it will take a long time for the choke to open completly. The hot air it pulls into the choke actually causes the choke spring to "wind up and contract".........opening the choke plate in the process.

Stielo..........Do you have the original Autolite carb??? If so......... First...........it has to be done while the car is cold...........in other words..............do not start it.........or attempt adjust it if its been running. To begin........the choke should be closed.........but not too tight with alot of pressure. To adjust it.........back off the screws that hold the black choke cap on (slightly) so it can be turned...........as you rotate it to the right...you will see the choke plate move and open the carb up. Turn it back to the left until the plate closes.......and stop. The tighter you turn it to the left........the longer it will take for the choke to open up since the spring inside is what will automaticly open it as the engine heats up.
