    "Thunderbird" By The Continentals~1961

Thanks to Chris ~ bird 60, here is a '60's group called The Continentals, singing "Thunderbird" ~ From Ted Mack Amateur Hour TV Show ~ July 9, 1961.

An interesting thing about The Continentals is that there were at least 3 groups by that name in New York alone, one in Brooklyn and two others in New York. Across the country, there were also other groups by the same name, including one here in Texas! It was a popular name. Apparently, the group in this video never made it to the big time, which was often the case. On some websites, there is quite a discussion as to who started the surf music theme and mode of dress that cropped up and was made popular by the Beach Boys. Many cite the Beach Boys but this group was slightly before they formed. That question may never be answered fully.

I have about 18 Thunderbird songs, and if anyone is interested and would like to have them, email or PM me. I put them on a USB thumb drive, and plug it into a battery powered .mp3 player. I have been known to show up at S&S events, playing my Tbird music, or sitting it on the car to play til the battery runs down...

I would have thought that Dick Dale was first man with his Surfin' sounding guitar. And I would have thought that the Jan & Dean duo had a hand in it with the vocals. The beach boys covered a few of Jan & Deans songs.

Chris you are correct that Dick Dale and the Del-Tones with his " Let's go Trippin " song in 1961 was the original using a new reverb sound on his guitar and quick pickin indicating the speed of surfing. Other records were simply instrumentals but no words.
Others copied such as Dwayne Eddy / Chuck Berry later but was really made famous by as you have already said Jan &Dean and the Beach boys using surfing words.

Great stuff Ray, I really enjoyed it!

And the footwork of the lead singer was pretty flash. (Downunder for great)

Chris ~ bird 60 sent me information regarding Dick Dale, and how the Fender guitars, amps, speakers, etc., came about. You music aficionados should find this music history interesting. Thanks, Chris!
