    Expansion tank differences

My '58 came with an aluminum expansion tank that eventually
leaked and was repaired. When I got it repaired the shop mentioned that welding/soldering aluminum was not easy. A year later,
it leaks a little again, along one of the top seams.

I acquired another tank to serve as a backup as this seems (based on comments in this Web site) to be a never ending problem. Today
I cleaned up the tank to take it and have it tested. This one
    is made out of brass.

So the question is: is either material a better choice to possibly hold up? Is one a later attempt by Ford to provide a lasting
    tank?

I know there are repro tanks on the market (which also leak in some cases). Does anyone know what material they are made out of?

Finally, if we can put a man on the Moon, why can't we have a tank that holds up to 15 psi???

    thanks!

    RE: Expansion tank differences

oh, the saga of expansion tanks....

I bought 2 original tanks after my first one started leaking and all of them developed a leak within a few months of being installed. Tried to get them all rebuilt and re-soldered and none of them held up at all.

So, I bit the bullet and bought a new repro tank. It lasted about 3 months before it too started to leak.
It was replaced by the parts supplier and now this one seems to be holding up (it's been about 6 months now). Knock on wood..

My '64 Galaxie had a 390 it and also an expansion tank. It was the ribbed variety and seemed to be sturdier - didn't leak.

    all of 'em were brass.

As far as I know all the original expansion tanks were made of brass. There has been a few comments that some were made of steel, but as of today I cannot confirm this rumor. As for Aluminum, this is some sort of aftermarket piece.

Neat way to display it to remove the paint and polish the tank to a brilliant shine.

My mistake...the one that came with the car is made out of steel (I put a magnet on it).
