    Fender Skirts

I have been reading in an Australian Ford Forum how a lot of reproduced fenders / sheet metal parts for T-Birds are not up to standard in terms of thickness, fit etc. No-one will quote what is good or bad though.

My baby did not come with fender skirts and I would desparately like to fit them. Has anyone had a successful result, and if so what supplier please? Am I better to wait until a used pair comes on feebay?

    Thanks
    Bill

Keep looking for a used set of skirts. BTW, I don't think anyone has reproduced these skirts yet in metal. I've seen fiberglass ones years back that one had to BOLT on...

Yeah I bought a set of those f-glass ones years ago from "Big Jim" in Texas.. didn't fit worth a #$%^.
I threw them in the trunk when I sold the car. Stay clear.

I have been watching ebay for a set, they seem to go for at least $200.

You might have to buy two sets to get a pair of real good ones. After that, sell the leftovers. You will need to get new gaskets (rubber) from one of the parts suppliers. Then there is the issue of getting them painted to match your car. You also might check your fender for any repairs that might prevent a good fit. I believe there is a little stud
or two that are supposed to be sticking down. It could be missing.

Those fender skirt pins can be purchased new from the T-Bird vendors as well....

Does anyone know if the studs are there regardless of whether the car came from the factory with fender skirts or not??

Don't know about that, but the 59 I have didn't have the skirts when I pulled from the field, but the studs/pins are there?

I don't believe ALL T-Birds came with these pins, but I'm only 69% sure about that....

Also check that there is a fender lip on your car. When mine was restored by the prior owner, the passenger side fender lip wasn't replaced to match the factory specs. When I got the car home, noticed the skirt was loose. A further check and discovered there wasn't a lip for the skirt hook to grab when fastened. Glad I didn't lose the skirt before I noticed this, it was hanging on be the two pins.

Thank you all for your thoughts, Penelope does have the pins and the lip on both fenders.I am led to beleive that she never had the skirts from the factory, so in her case it looks like she had the ability to have skirts, but never did. A case of all dressed up, but nowhere to go!

I will continue to scan e-bay...:-)

                          Cheers,

I think all the 58-60 came with skirts although it was an option. and the dealer would take them off if you said no. My 60 had the pins no skirts. But some people just left them off cause they were to hard to put back on. Or didn't have the time........

In any wet/snowy climate, they would have been a real threat to rust out as the backside could catch and hold dirt and moisture.

The other thing that might have gotten them put aside would be the difficulty they added to changing the tires.

Does the Ford literature from then list them as a dealer option?
