76.96 inches is the width of a 1958-60 Thunderbird.

      RE: 1960 width

The 1960 Thunderbird was narrow compared to the 1960 full-sized Ford. The full size Ford was 81.5 inches wide. The cars of 1960 were so wide that the US government threaten to tax the widest cars as trucks. Many cars were above the 80 inch limit for cars in 1960. The next year the 1961 Ford was narrowed. Most manufacturers complied with this government edict.

Interestingly, the 1958 Thunderbird was actually designed narrower than the production model. The pre-production 1958 Thunderbird was found to have body interference with the travel of the rear wheels. At the last minute, the drawings were revised by cutting them lengthwise and adding one inch. These were the days before computer design. These kind of mistakes don't happen with modern CAD/CAM design.

The squarebirds were still wider then the cars of today, even our Lincolns.
