    asking about the gearshift lever.

Hi i noticed that i have slightly wear when switching on to gears..

the car stays on park perfectly and no problem in that.. but when you switch on to any other gear the gearshift lever has some play..

    The worrying part is this..

On Neutral it got some play. On D2 it got some play too .. Even On D1... but then it seems that doesnt engage on low.. ?

infact the picture here shows the far the lever can go ... how can i Know if it has engaged on the low gear... or else... what can I do so that it engages on the low gear?

I also noticed that the upper part of the column has the hole elongated so i will be soon buying the turqoise replacemnt part.. and maybe a new gearshift lever too.. regarding the low i`m a bit worried.. i know it used to engage in low .. becuase you can hear it rev a bit.. but now not so sure.. ... feeling slightly confused

Thanks in anticipation for your help fellas

Most likely the shift tube selector arm at the bottom of the steering column is worn. That's the arm that connects the shift linkage to the transmission. It is a common problem. There are a number of threads that deal with replacing it if you do a search.

        ask about the gearshift lever.

Geoffrey, if you are gonna pull the steering wheel and replace that shift tube selector arm, look at the Technical Resource Library and it will tell you how to do it. In fact, here is the link.

        http://www.squarebirds.org/picture_g...eplacement.htm

Here is what my worn shift tube selector arm looked like. You can see the wear in the ring and in the inset. This is one of the major causes, after some 50+ years, of sloppyness in the column shifter. You can buy them from any of the major Tbird parts houses. The Bird Nest has them. Part #7203A for $29.95.

Geoffrey might also be a good time with it apart, to replace the detent plate as that would be worn as well. You can order the detent plate off our site as one of our members has inventory and can look after sending it out to you.

              Geoffrey:
I'm currently putting my third steering column together and with each one I seem to learn a little more. Here is a list of parts that I replace:
              1. Shift tube selector arm (B7302A) $29.95
              2. Shift Detent Plate (B7216A) $24.95
              3. Shift Collar (B7228A) $109.95
              4. Steer Column Upper Bearing (B3517A) $10.95
              5. Steer Column Bearing Sleeve (B3518B) $8.67
              6. Shift Lever incl. Bushing (B7210F) $38.95
The above part numbers are for a 60 and were purchased at Larry's. Most of the parts houses seem to pretty much use the same numbering system for the parts.
The disappointing piece is the shift collar, which is the most expensive. There are 2 wear points on this collar, with the most wear occurring where the shift lever pin goes. The second wear point is where the collar slides over the shift tube and slides on a piece of steel to prevent the collar from rotating on the shift tube. The wear here is very similar the the wear on the shift tube selector arm. When they repo'd the part, they didn't tighten this fit and it still gives a little play on the PRNDDL indicator. It is liveable, but a little annoying.
With the replacement of these parts, you will have a secure Park, Start in P and N only and reasonable indication of what gear you are in.
Hope this is a little help with your path forward.
              Nyles

Does anyone have an exploded diagram of the shifter assembly that they could post??

Ray, when you say that the wear is apparent, I assume you are talking about the wear in the notch. Is it the side-side travel that is the problem? Whatever pin rides in that notch eventually (due to wear) can move farther than it originally could? Am I understanding the problem at all?

If I am in Drive and move the shift lever then there is noticeable travel or play that accomplishes nothing. I am guessing that both the pin and that notch allow that play and, with new properly made parts, much of it vanishes. I would guess what little lubrication Ford put in 59 years ago is long, long gone.

But I have never taken one of these apart so I know only slightly more than I do about gene-splicing or speaking Mandarin Chinese. I have only gotten into the steering area enough to repair the turn signal internals.

                  asking about the gearshift lever.

No, John, it was the inside of the ring AND the notched area that was showing a lot of wear. My mechanic, and me not knowing back then that they were available new, decided to weld it up, smooth it out and put it back on. Had I known then that you could buy a new one, I would have. I did not take mine apart either. I left that to a mechanic who knew what he was doing.

Can that be replaced from the bottom of the column? Or must the column be removed to replace it?

You have to remove the column. Look at the link in the TRL further down in the thread.

As mentioned in the other thread, this was my experience with the arm end. Has anyone used a new shift collar, tube, and arm and ended up with ZERO play? (in that assembly, anyway)
