I just installed the detent shift kit in my 1964 TBird. It is a 2 person job as a FYI. At the time I did this I bought the kit but not the shift lever. After getting assembled I still had slippage of lever and did notice the old lever had notch wear. I received my new lever today and am asking this question. Do I have to totally disassemble all the way down to the detent plate to replace the lever? I got the old shifting lever off but as I look inside hole I see a piston/button that gets pushed down when you lift lever --assuming this must be the contact button needed when starting? I stick my finger in the hole and feel the detent plate on the top or toward steering wheel. I do not want to force lever but also hate to take all apart --especially the C clamp/spring that is on top of the shaft bearing. Suggestions or does anyone have experience in replacing shifting lever? Thanks
