'60 Tbird Speedo/Fuel Gauge Bezel Removal

This post is for Bubba, a new Techie member who is working on repairing a '60 Tbird in his shop. Bubba, I sent you an email about this from my yellowrose@squarebirds.org email address. This is a reminder to all new users on our Forum that before you register, please add that email address of mine, Dave Dare's Simplyconnected@aol.com and webmaster@squarebirds.org into your address book. Otherwise, any emails we send you might just go into your Spam or Delete folder and you might never see them.

Bubba here is what I sent you in email. The covers with the glass in them over the fuel/temp gauge, speedo and clock pull right off. They have prongs on them that snap into place when you put them on. For the other bezels go through the link at the bottom. Dave still has a deal I think that is available. If your CVR unit is shot, for $20 for a Paid Membership and your bad CVR unit, he will build you a solid state one in your bad CVR unit and ship it back to you. You wont have to worry about that CVR unit going out on you in the future, as the OEM one has for me and others. Eventually, I put in a solid state unit and that eliminated that problem.

Here is a link regarding the '58-'59 Squarebirds that will also apply to the '60. This should tell you how to remove those items from the instrument panel. If the Fuel/Temp gauge is not indicating anything, that could be because the Constant Voltage Regulator (CVR) unit mounted either on the back of the instrument panel or on a support frame for the dash panel, is shot. It takes 12V input, through the CVR unit and drops it down to something below 6V for the gauges to handle since they are 6V gauges. If that CVR unit went bad, it could let 12V go to the wiring of the gauges, fry the wiring and the gauges won't work. If the CVR unit is bad, you can get one from any of the many Tbird Parts houses listed in the Advertisements Forum. Or if it is just the Fuel gauge that is not indicating, it could be a bad sending unit in the tank, or the lack of a ground. If the temperature gauge is not indicating, it could be a bad temperature sending unit on the block or a disconnected one. Here is that link. I hope this helps. If you have more questions, either post them in the 1958-1960 Squarebirds Forum, or call Dave Dare ~ simplyconnected, our webmaster, or myself.

The link is more about replacing the dash pad, but there is info there that should help you get those bezels off.

A necessary step in getting the gauges to work is clean the grounds for both sending units.

For any electrical circuit to work, it has to be complete and that includes the point where it grounds. There is not much amperage in these so good connections are important

The grounds on old cars are suspect for at least two reasons: rust and paint. In the case of the fuel level sending unit, you also get goop from gas vapors.

You can always temporarily run a little jumper wire from the sending unit in either case, to the block or body and see if things improve.

Once you have the grounds cleaned up, you can move on to other issues such as the voltage source Ray discussed.

PS: while you have the bezels off, if you are not happy with the lens on them, it is not that big a deal to duplicate what is there with plexiglass or something similar. They can be removed and then you just trace them on new material and cut with a sabre saw.
