Correct mirrors for the '58 HT ??
Yes, I guess you could make your own rubber base. Anders, Mac's online catalog is Mac's Antique Auto Parts, 1955-1966 Tbirds. www.macsautoparts.com Tbird Hqs has the cheapest one I have seen so far and it comes with the rubber pad.

I would think you could trace the base of the mirror on a section of inner tube with a pencil and then carefully cut it out with an Xacto knife. (who needs inner tubes?? Unless you are a wire wheel guy in which case you don't worry about spending a couple bucks on a pad ).
Thanks, everyone , for all the great info!!

Correct mirrors for '58 HT ??
First of all, Anders, there ARE 58-59 molded rubber base gaskets for your Adjust-O-Ring mirrors available from Mac's Auto Parts, website as below.. www.macsautoparts.com Page 216 on their catalog listed as B8S-17724-A $6.95 each.
Now, as for a template, you can use the rubber gasket as the template, I would think. As to where you want to put it, it appears to be your choice. In 1958, from what I have read, the '58's came off the line without mirrors, and the 59's and 60's also. We have seen pictures of them on the line or coming off it with no mirrors on them. Read page two of this thread, for what Dano said.. Basically, if you wanted a mirror, the dealer got one out of stock, whatever it might be that they had, probably showed it to you, and you said yes, that will do, and they put it on.
Now, where they put it on varies. Mine is on my door in such a location that it cannot be very well used. You can hardly make use of it with it in that location. I will post a picture of mine and you can see that the vent window posts interfere with using it. I will post what is said in the Tbird Restoration Guide, '58-'66 and a picture of where it is mounted. It is on the very end of the fender right before the break between the fender and the door.
Then Dano told us that he mounted his 37 inches back from the gunnel sight support pillar and installed his there. I will show you a picture of it below. Here is what the VTCI says are authorized exterior mirrors for the '58 & '59. The '60's have one more.

I don't know if this is going to line up, but you should be able to see that there were 3 different mirrors the VTCI says that could be used on these two year, and a 4th one for the '60, which I did not show here. Now, on the VTCI CD there are two different pictures of the Adjust-O-Ring. One is installed BEFORE the break between the fender and the door, ON the fender, it appears to me. The other is installed on the door. The one on the fender would be easier to view, I would think.
But the point is, regarding these Squarebirds, is that you could probably put them anywhere you wanted to... 37 inches from the gunnel sight back towards the windshield. On the very end of the fender panel, or at the beginning of the door panel. Personally, I think Dan Leavens has the right idea. He has his mounted where they can be easily used, and they tell him what he has behind him, instead of the view being blocked by the vent window chrome...
Here are some pix. First of mine, then of Dano's and finally, the Restoration Guide statement and picture shown with the Adjust-O-Mirror mounted on the fender, not the door...Last edited by YellowRose; August 10, 2009, 12:41 AM.

Ray is correct! Mine on Christine are on the fender, but the chrome on the wind glass is some what in the way. My suggestion would be put some tape on the bottom (to keep from scratching paint) and get someone to hold them on the fender till you get it where you want it. Mark that spot and then measure back from the gunnel site glass on the front of the fender and get dimension for passenger side. Once Christine is disassembled, I'm going to weld up the holes and move mine.

Most of you already know, but for all those newbies, I'm the 2nd owner of my 1960 Bird. My ROT sheet is marked for dual outside mirrors and both of mine are screwed into the rear front fender edge. They are the square "hooded" type exterior mirrors commonly seen on late 1959 & most 1960's Squarebirds....

thanks, Jon! That's good information. Are your screw holes also 4 1/2" on center??
(do those mirrors also have a "name" like the Adjust-O-Ring ?)

Mirrors mounted here are at risk when the mechanic needs to lean over and get into the engine. It looks very cool, but I would rather see them a little closer to the windshield. (IMHO) - Dave

Those would be way too far forward, in my opinion. I dont want to say I have the hood open alot but... the truth is the truth and those would be in the way!!
$5 apiece??? You really know how to hurt a guy!!! (currently $137 so 27x as expensive. I don't think the Consumer Price Index relative to 1958 is 27... later... no, only about 7.5 so they ought to cost about $37.50 today. No such luck! )Last edited by JohnG; August 13, 2009, 04:44 PM.1958 Hardtop
