Anyone tried installing cupholders in a '59 console? Anything like cutting a nice clean round hole forward of the ashtray, or maybe behind the speaker. I'm wondering how much depth there is between the top of the console and the top of the tunnel.

I have several friends that removed the center console speaker and put cup holders in that location. If I remember, you only have about 2 1/4" from the console to center hump.

Cupholders
Thanks guys! I knew there was some experience and creativity out there. I'm new to Squarebirds (or it's new to me) so I learning as I go. I'm not keen on the idea of giving up my center speaker so maybe I'll engineer something closer to the dash. Lots of opportunities to update my '59 and enjoy the cruising. Converting the ashtray light to an under-radio courtesy light (who uses maps anymore?) from a later 'Bird sounds like a good idea too. JackComment

Console Cupholders
Welcome to the Forum, Jack. I happen to have that map light for the convertible Squarebirds installed underneath my radio in Tweety Bird. It is not difficult to make and all the instructions on making one, and the wiring are found in the Technical Resource Library (TRL), the link to which is always part of my signature element and that of John Pizzi ~ jopizz. If you have not visited the TRL yet, you should because it is chock full of information regarding the Squarebirds. If you have some spare time, give me a call, because there is much more I can tell you about that Bird of yours that you should know. Also about where you can get parts for it. Here is the link on how to make that map light. In my center console, there is a long stem Yellow Rose, a tribute to my late wife, who loved them. When I drive at night, I can flip the light switch on under the radio and drive with the rose lit up....

I installed a switch panel inside the ash tray compartment and then installed a small LED under the radio. Worked great. Know it's not factory, but I liked the affect.
