255's are 10" wide, so be careful. That number is the tire section width in millimeters at its widest point, where it bulges out. 25.4mm=1". Tires and applications vary, so depending on the wheel width and actual tire design, it may me a little wider or narrower. I've got 235's on my 17's.
Also, putting 10" wide tires on 8" wide wheels might result in more side to side shift of the tire to the rim. If the tires have a stiff sidewall, you might be OK, but you might get enough movement to have it rub. I put 215's on my Mazda when it called for 205's and the thing wiggled all over. Took constant steering correction to keep it in the lane. I went back to the 205's.
I think most tires have recommended rim widths. Again, I'd push the tire shop for recommendations. They should know best, make them make the call. Tell them what you're after and have them tell you what to do.
