Occasional electricity smoke from this part ?

Hello guys, can anyone tell what is this part responsible for? It is located in the engine compartment on the driver's side firewall just to the right from the brake cylinder.

I'm occasionaly getting electricity smoke caused by burning cable isolation mostly from (I guess) the bottom cable that leads into this part. Originally thought the smoke was mostly on cranking. Not sure now.

That's your coil resistor. If any part of the resistor or wiring is smoking replace it. They are fairly inexpensive and relatively easy to find.

Thank you John. Seems I will learn and solve lot of things on this particular engine issue I'm solving just now . Can you please briefly explain what does the resistor do?

It cuts the voltage to your coil from 12V to about 9V when the engine is running to save the points.
