Keep a spare ballast resistor in the trunk! It dies - you walk.

The ballast resistor is not generic. It should be matched up to the coil you are using. The resistance is different for different coils. But for sheer sake of getting the car running, any will do.

        engine dies in gear

        Hi Chris,

Here are a couple of pix of my ballast resistor. It mounts up against the firewall between the right side of the MC and the left side of the drivers side hood latch. It is a ceramic rectangular block with two wires hooking to it. Mine is right by and slightly below a vacuum hose that goes through the firewall. Here are the pix of mine when it was taken out to inspect it.

I once got a sudden stop while driving, and luckely, it was only a few hundred meters from home, so we towed the car in something best describe as walking speed, because it was. Now, after looking at many different reasons to this I finally discovered that one of the contacts to the ballast resistor have got loose. I put it on again, and since then, no stops.
The reason I write this is just to highlight that it might be a good reason to check that they sit tight.

I am back and on my 8th week after the operation

I have been playing with cars for a longggg time and low trans oil level making the car die is just silly. Poor movment, burning smell etc but making it die (POO). Well bless your heart for sending that suggestion to me. I still can not do any work with my arm but I was able to start the bird and check the oil level. YES, it was low, so I went and got some oil - put in in and dropped the shifter in gear.

Son-of-a-! The bird did not die. I put it in reverse and it did not die. I got brave and drove it out of the garage onto the drive. Reverse and back in the garage. After several more tries, I shut it down and came to own up to my complete stupidity. Tomorrow I will go around the block and I will be thanking you all the time.

              Dave
