Help! 1960 Handbrake upper cable replacement

I just got the aftermarket cable/housing part from Thunderbird Headquarters to replace the cable on my parking brake from the handle to the underside of the car. I unbolted the handle bracket from the underside of the dashboard, and attempted to remove the old cable end from the pull shaft, but it is clocked in such a way that I cannot get the cable end ball out of it's slot. There is a smooth topped metal protrusion on the parking brake shaft that stops the rotation of the shaft within it's housing, and does not seem to be removable..this protrusion is stopping me from being able to rotate the shaft to the position I need it to be for removal and replacement of the cable..
Anyone done this before? I just know there is a trick to this!

hi there i have had this one apart,, you can lever the round headed pin out but it is very very tight!! then rotate the lever and if you are lucky you can then get the small ball end out... you may have to drop the wheel out on the firewall side... i did this the 1st time and it made it a lot easier
