Before pulling parts off, let's test the gauge and wiring. You'll need a helper. Warm up the engine then shut the key off.
(A Red/White wire can mean, a red wire with a red stripe OR a red wire with a white end cap.) After age, sometimes WHITE becomes darker or more like YELLOW.- Have someone in the car to watch the gauge and to turn the key to OFF. (The engine needs to be warm.)
- Take the Red/White wire off the Temp Sending Unit and hold it tightly on a good ground. If the end cap wire isn't exposed, use a nail or screw to stick in the cap to make contact. Just about any engine metal will do. Don't worry, you can't get a shock from this wire.
- While holding on ground, turn the key to "ON" (not 'start').
- Watch the gauge. If it moves the Temp Unit needs to be replaced. If it doesn't move, follow the wire from the sending unit to the firewall to make sure it isn't unplugged.
