My speedometer started whinning and going nuts, so I put a new cable in and it still diddn't work (no whinning though). Upon looking at the speedometer I noticed that the little spring behind the needle is shot. I'm assuming I need to have it rebuilt. Anyone have any suggestions as to where, how, is it possible? My speedometer now just bounces around and stays at 45 when parked.Help!!!!! tbirdave

RE: Speedometer has gone whacko
You can get used speedometers from many of the Thunderbird vendors on our links page or on eBay. They do not go for much money. It is not very difficult to set the odometer to read whatever mileage you have at present.

RE: Speedometer has gone whacko
The quickest and cheapest thing might be to simply buy another speedo. I bought one on Ebay for someone else's car and paid about $10. Turned out to be quite nice. One of the members on this site might have a spare. You need to specify black *'58) or white ('59-60) face.
When you get one, make sure and lubricate any moving contact points (bushings and so on). This sometimes is the cause of the needle bouncing around.
If you opt for the rebuild process, there are a number of places listed in Hemmings that specialize in such work (I think there is a "Bobs Speedometer" repair in Minnesota, for example).

RE: Speedometer has gone whacko
Another helpful preventative trick is to lube the inside of the speedometer cable with general weght oil (3 in 1 wors well) This helps ensure the inside stays well lubercated and will not rust. As your putting it in, turn the cable to help it get all the way down.
