Exhaust Manifold Gasket

I replaced the exhaust manifold gasket(352) on '59 driver's side. I don't think these have ever been apart. The pass. side is still original, with no leak. Broke some bolts, but after replacement, I still have a leak. I did not have anything planed. I heard maybe a double gasket would fix? Anybody done that?

If you are going to take the manifold off again, you might put it on something to check for flatness. If it is warped it will cost very little to get it fixed.

JC Whitney sells a copper based exhaust gasket which a number of people on this site swear by. I have purchased a set but not installed them yet. If you do a search, I believe Alexander posted a part number and also the JCW url.

How did you get the broken bolts out?? Bet that was fun...

"Luckily"?, they were uppers and broke off near the bolt head, so I could grab the shaft of the bolt after I got the manifold off. Don't want to do THAT again, but the other side will inevitably fail. I'm quite sure these haven't been off before, no gaskets at all on them.
I'll check around for the copper gaskets, thanks...

I have also had problems chronically with leaky exhaust manifold gaskets. They always manage to leak at the mating surface to the head. I have also tried header type gaskets, which seal better than the stock gaskets, but tend to blow after they dry and harden. The best solution I found is to use copper exhaust gaskets. These can be obtained for the big block Ford from JC Whitney http://www.jcwhitney.com/ . They are SCE Pro Copper gaskets, JC Whitney part #81DL4478W. They are listed as fitting FE engines from 61-71, but they do fit the 58-60, since they fit on my 1959. They will never leak or blow. After about a year of oxidation, they have the almost the same color as stock gaskets.
Bob's Bird House http://www.bobsbirdhouse.com/ also sells a grey colored thick high tech gasket set. It worked for a friend's squarebird.
