I am replacing the bushings in my '58 (power steering version). I got replacements from NAPA.
1) what does anyone have for a tried method for replacing the one in the steering rod, with it still in the car?
I have the bracket for the other end on the workbench can see using the bench vise to press that one in, but not sure what would be a good method underneath the car with the other one
2) does anyone have a sense of what clearance between the inner bushing sleeve and the idler arm itself is acceptable ? (equivalently, when do you need a new idler arm) The bushings that were in there had no allowance for grease hence there has been steel on steel for who knows how many years. I have not done any measuring yet to see what I have for clearance with my new bushing and old arm. I did not find any clearance in the shop manual.
Later: the shorter end of the idler arm (steering rod end) , after measuring it, has some possible problems. The top to bottom taper is .007". The clearance with a new bushing will range from .010" to .017". Feels sloppy.
The longer end (bracket end) has only about .002" taper and will have clearances with a new bushing of .006" or so.
