I just called the Valvoline tech line. They show that the 64 Bird is a C4 automatic, nothing is indicated showing Cruise-O-Matic. They recommend Type FA (Ford Automatic), their part #822387.

C4's couldn't be had in a bird until 1966. Even then only 1/2 had them...

Stay with Type "A or F" fluid if this transmission has NOT been overhauled (to the best of your knowledge).

Type F can be bought at the local Autozone stores here...

Jon is correct. According to Automotive Mile Posts, the COM was used in the 1964, 1965 and 1966 Flairbirds until mid November 1966 when they switched to the C6 tranny NOT the C4.

It supposedly has been overhauled, but I'm questioning that, since they re-used the blue permatex form-a-gasket that I put on when I changed the filter to drive it down from NY 17 years ago. And it of course leaked like a sieve while I was waiting for the engine to be rebuilt. Yeah, I'm having some problems with the guy who did it...

Looking at the pictures here, I have the COM pan, identified by the 14 bolts and the little bump on the left top corner. However my dip stick goes into the side of the pan.

This is the poorest article I've ever seen. From the start, they claim to not know much about Ford transmissions. Boy, THAT's for sure...

"Ford offered a "Fordomatic" two-speed between 1959 and 1964 in six-cylinder applications exclusively (mainly in Falcons, Comets, and so on)."

How is it that my stock '55 Ford Customline came with a Ford-O-Matic AND a 272 Y-block V8???

Yeah, the center case is cast iron, so mine's a COM.
