I should conclude it's the control valve since that's the part that changed besides the lines. As long as the part comes off the pitman arm easily that I might be able to face this again.

When you installed the control valve did you use the 10 3/4" measurement from the ball stud center to the spindle bolt as the manual specifies.

I normally mark it or I count the turns as I wind it off. Most times it's very close to the 10 3/4 measurement. You don't want the valve to be so far in or out that the ball stud isn't truly centered with the wheels straight. I'm trying to think of all the other possibilities before you remove the valve and send it back. Did you closely inspect the belt after you said it was smoking to make sure it isn't glazed.

Marked and counted threads just as a precaution. The belt isn't glazed. What would you suspect if, if it wasn't the control valve? Next would be the pump? The ironic thing is that the steering seems fine except for the noise that just isn't right.Comment

You have two choices. You can send the valve back and risk nothing or you can spend over $100 for a new pump and hope it fixes it. I know what I would do but you do what you want.

No offense taken. ;-) I've just used this procedure on several cars and saved the owners money, as they were ready to start replacing parts. Sometimes things work and sometimes they don't, but I'm usually willing to give it a try.

I wouldn't get into too much detail except to say that you've bled it numerous times, you followed the manual's instructions when you installed it and that the noise wasn't there with the old valve. They may have some suggestions but I doubt they can come up with something you haven't tried. Does the P/S pump cover have the removable cap for checking the fluid level. How much fluid is in there when it's cold. It should be a 1/4" below the cover.

Yes, I have the cap with the dangling stick. The fluid level is right on when I checked it hot.
I don't expect Larry's to make any suggestions with regard to solving the issue, but my fate is in their hands as far as any exchange is concerned. I'm just very down about the entire experience because there's so many issues I have new parts for and I want to start those.Comment

I would check the fluid level when it cools down. The fluid has a tendency to foam when it's hot and can give you a false reading.
There's no reason for Larry's not to take it back. I've returned things to them in the past and never had a problem. I'm sure they didn't rebuild it so it's hard for them to argue with you. I guarantee you aren't the first person who sent one back.

New twist: Larry's thinks it's not the control valve since noise coming from pump.
Pump now leaks fluid up through reservoir cap and it's not overfilled. PS pump groans while cold and makes noise only when turning steering wheel. Just the opposite of before. Why has this changed, I wonder. Maybe I'll get lucky and something will break.Last edited by Deanj; January 4, 2016, 01:34 PM.Comment
