Pix Of trim code 76's Avanti!

It isn't a Tbird, but ya'll wanted to see pix of it, and so did I, so here is what Greg sent me. She is nice looking! I see Greg has a Start Lock on it, like I have on Rose. The neat thing about that is you can unscrew that knob, put it in your pocket and walk off. You can't start the car without that knob. Unless someone gets under the hood and takes it off! I use it when Rose is in the garage, ever mindful of what happened to Kev's beloved Golde Top... I unscrew the knob a few turns and that cuts the power to the wiring...

A friend of mine has a convertible Avanti, a 2002, in HOT Yellow-on-black with black leather interior. I drool everytime I see it. It was $72,000.

Hope you don't mind I fixed your link for you.

That would make a good running car, I do recognize the mirror and windscreen, looks just like my 2000 SS Camaro.....

ACTUALLY, THE PICTURED AVANTI IS A 2005, BASED UPON A MUSTANG GT CONVERTIBLE.
ALSO CAME AS A GT COUPE. 2006 WERE THE FINAL ONES. MY FRIENDS AVANTI IS A 2003, BASED UPON A FIREBIRD TRANS AM (COUPE OR CONVERT WAS AVAILABLE). HIS IS A A 'VERT ALSO. ON THE SERIES MADE ON FIREBIRDS A SUPERCHARGER WAS AN OPTION. THAT WAS DROPPED WHEN THE FIREBIRD WAS DISCONTINUED AND THEY SWITCHED OVER THE THE MUSTANG.
          FIREBIRD BASED WERE 2002 2003 & 2004
MUSTANG BASED WERE 2005 2006. I HEARD THE TOTAL MUSTANG BASED UNITS TOTALLED 15
9 VERTS AND 6 COUPES. PONTIAC TRAS AM BASES AVANTIS NUMBERED JUST 53 OVER THE 3 YEARS.

Greg, is yours an R1 or an R2? One is supercharged, one is not. ( I can't see anything suggesting a supercharger in the photos) Can you tell us the VIN?

            Absolutely terrific car!!!

              Interesting ...

has the ford style expansion tank. Studebaker made some great cars. When I was a kid my neighbor had a 57' Studeillac. Golden Hawk with a Caddy mill and two McCullough(spelling) superchargers. Mike

It is a R1. All original down to factory shocks, all glass original, original heater hoses, one original fan belt.only thing replaced in interior is the carpeting. 1 repaint in 1964 ish. Runs perfectly. I love my bird, but this is absolutely the best car I have ever driven. WHAT A RIDE! First car in the USA with disc brakes. Fastest production car (with R3 option) in the USA until 1965. Corvett, no contest!

Vin number: R2114 (#1114 off the line). They only made about 3,500 in 1963 and 1964 so pretty rare car. This is no joke, I know where the very last Studebaker Avanti is!! It is about 1 hr from my house, they may sell it at some point! It is at the LeMay auto Museum in Tacoma WA. If / when they sell it, I WILL buy it! How cool will it be to have the last squarebird and the last Avanti made!!!

                    hi Greg

My friend reports that perhaps 4643 Avantis were made, total, with the last one coming off the line in December 31, 1963. His is a gold R1395 (see photo below. R1 motor)

The following site claims to know where the last Avanti made is; the VIN is R5643 and it is in the Crawford Museum in Cleveland (see http://www.theavanti.com/last_studebaker.htm and also http://www.studebaker-info.org/avantix5.html ) R5643 is a very rare R3 engine (supercharged with additional displacement). The article at http://www.studebaker-info.org/avdb/...3/64r5643.html has a worker leaving a note: "This is the last Studebaker Avanti built, 12/31/63, Happy New Year" and was signed by an employee with his badge number as well.

Keep us posted on what you find!

                      John,
That is one beautiful Avanti!!! I have just finished up negotiations with the car museum and have talked them into keeping the first Avanti off the line!! This is where it belngs in a museum where it is safe and present for all to see. The last one (reported by the museum) that they have is very hard to prove as first off the hood release is stuck so no verification could be made, suposidly it is the last, but who knows at this point! So that is where we are at. I have the editor who did my squarebird with me now and he will be shooting the Avanti on Tues. Will be slated for a magazine at the end of this year.
