    Shift Collar replacement

I removed my steering column to repaint and noticed that the holes for the roll pin for the shifter is wore out. I have a lead on a 1959 FAIRLANE 500 shift collar.

Does anyone know if this will fit?

$99.00 for a new one is an awesome price!!

I am hoping to get the used on for a lot less if it is in good shape and will fit.

The Squarebird shift collar is unique. The Fairlane won't fit.

        Hope I'm not too late

I just replaced my shift collar. It was $99.95 at Thunderbird Headquarters in Concord, Ca. It may sound a little steep, but the reproduction is MUCH better than the original. Two drawbacks; finding the correct roll pin (7/32nds ?) and the color was green.

The pin is tight in the shift lever with no rotation. The pin should be snug in the collar, but much less so than the lever. The mechanical advantage of the lever allows the pin to rotate in the collar. Over years, the collar holes get enlarged.

Mine was so far gone that I could almost fit a 1/4" drill bit through it.

T-Bird H/q is the place I was looking at if my repair does not hold. I decided to try a repair job first using a metal putty to see if this will take the stress of the roll pin.

FeFranco do you know what type of metal the replacement is made of? Is it cast from the same as the original (cast pot metal? Aluminum). I took mine to the polishing wheel and it looks as good as a new chrome job.

              Thanks.

                Replacement Collar

It seems like it is made of the same material as the original, but, much THICKER where the shifter goes into the collar. Which gives you more substance where the roll pin goes in.

Mine is just the opposite. It's not sloppy, it's very hard to operate. Finding D1 is difficult. The collar is fairly new. I guess I need to go through it.

                    John:
I noticed before I started my resto/mod I had problems with Park and D1 so this might not be the issue with yours but worth the check before you tear the column apart. I found my problem was the connector ant the end of the steering column (under the hood by the steering box) was wore out; I put the car in N and could move the connector about a 1/4" in both directions. 1/2" total movement with out the indicator moving at all. When I took the column apart and removed what appeared to be 47 years of grease I could see where the alignment pad on the shaft and the lever both had wore making the space wider between the 2.

I have seen here in this form how to adjust the linkage,

I hope that some of this has helped you.

Believe it or not my wife talked me into buying a new one; she said that I would be more satisfied with it, (ya she would).

                        But thanks for the info
