Undercoating
Rob,
Here is a link to a picture of the passenger side of my car when I had all the suspension out converting to discs - I am not able to post a pic directly in the email due to my user settings - guess I need to get with the moderators.
You can see an outline of a square that is not coated but I don't remember if that is 30J primer or body color - I suspect body color - I'll check (it all looks light gray because of dirt). My car was purchased new by my Dad so I know this is how it came from the factory - never was undercoated by Ziebart or any other aftermarket dealer unless it was done at or by the Ford dealer before my Dad bought it. Do not ever remember seeing a rubber flap on the wheel well but that outline had to be a flap or a factory blocking plate to keep the undercoating from getting into the engine compartment.
The Ford documentation I have about how the finish was carried out called "The story of your Thunderbird's finish" talks about prep work, primed, sprayed, rinsed, treated, dipped, then oven dried. Next it was primered oven baked and wet sanded. Then came the 30J neutral enamel - then bake and wet sand again. After that came the 30J color enamel then another baking and " Finally, each Thunderbird is fully undercoated." Since the undercoating was last and it would have already had the color present in the engine bay I bet Ford used some sort of block plate to keep the overspray from going in the engine bay. Didn't see any undercoating on the A-arms when I sandbalsted them so my guess is it was undercoated before the front suspension was installed.
Can get more pics if you need.

hi Eric
You said: The Ford documentation I have about how the finish was carried out called "The story of your Thunderbird's finish".
Any idea where I can get some kind of a copy of this?? Seems like great information!

my undercoating
When I redid both of my birds, I repainted the engine compartments and towers under the upper control arm. Masked the painted areas and undercoated the inner fender wells. I started the body undercoating from the engine compartment on the bottom of the car, all the way back to the rear bumper. Just like the picture from the last post, if you look up into the spring towers and bottom of the frame rails, you can see the paint.

Eric I too, think that any documentation that you have about " The Story of Your Thunderbirds Finish " would be very helpful to our site. Can you e-mail either John ( JohnG) or Ray ( Yellowrose ) this documentation and they can post on our site for all the members / guests?? That would be of great asset in our Technical Section.

Eric, that publication you mentioned is going to be quite popular.
"The story of your Thunderbird's finish"
I know I would love to see it as would most here. Funny how "new" things show up.
It's great that the car has been in your family since it was new. Every thing you look at you KNOW is original.Comment

Original documentation
Here is a link to the original letter and booklet sent to my Dad. (signed by Lee Iocacca - but don't tell the Chrysler folks) Can't lay my hands on the owners identification card mentioned but still have that as well.
Guess there is some sort of copyright law on the booklet but it does not have a copyright symbol.
Rob - hope this hasn't gotten to far off your undercoating question - still haven't forgotten about getting you the info about the wheel well color. It's dark when I get home from work so I'm waiting until the weekend to back the car out of the garage and get a new pic - hopefully I can spray some cleaner and water on the well and see if it will turn out better than the original pic I took.

Cubear,
I have a 60 bird that is unrestored original. It clearly shows how the undercoating should be in the wheel wells with the black overspray and undercoating and the "masked off area. If you would post your email I will email those to you. I can't upload them on this sight, sorry.

JohnG or Yellow Rose, I have an owners card if you have never seen one before. If you can let me know your email I will send the pic to you so you can post it in the section with all the other documented cool stuff. It is not the actual card for my car, (found the card on ebay), but my car is from California and the cards owner was from CA as well, so pretty close at least.
Greg
Also, a little off this post, I have to have my bird repainted (because it has been touched up and the original paint just can not be revived (rest of the car is in fantastic condition though). Can you tell if the bolts that hold the front and rear splash plates to the inner front wheel wells (on the metal flaps folded over into the wheel well from the rim of the well) were painted the body color or natural metal. I just can not tell on min for sure. Thanks!Comment
