painting/coating new front fender splash shields?

I am replacing the front fender splash shields; and am wondering what would be the best thing to paint or coat these new pieces with.

These panels are highly-visible when looking at the sides of these cars, and I dont want to screw it up....

I'm thinking non-rubberized undercoating would be best?

    thanks

I used POR 15 on mine after it dries you can hit it with a hammer and not scratch it it had a good gloss to it,buf if you use this be sure to wear rubber gloves, also if you have any left I use a mason canning jar after I put the extra paint in the jar place wax paper on the top then out the metal top on and screw the lid on this will keep the paint for many months, also I use throw away brush.

Did you fabricate the shields or were they available to purchase?

        Purchased!

As far as I can tell, Bird's Nest has them at the best price.

I'd hate to have to try to fabricate them....

The currently available fender shields are powder coated. You can add an undercoating if you like to kill the gloss. A textured undercoating would look more original if you can find it.

I got a repro pair from Pat Wilson Thunderbird a couple years ago or so. Mine were rusted thru so alot of work to restore them. His worked well. See:

                  $95 each from Bird's Nest (tbirdparts.com)

Some of the other suppliers are around $105.

A light coating of truck bed liner would look good as well. Spray it on if you don't want too much texture, or roll it on in thin coats. The stuff is super strong and you won't have to worry about starring any paint from rock or debris.

While I dont have any photos, I can tell you that these are exactly the same as the originals. All the holes are in the same spots and everything. Very nice reproductions.

Dont forget to order the rubber seal/flap kit when you order these items. I pulled out the old steel staples and attached mine with black weatherstrip adhesive.

I am going to install them as they are. If I change my mind and think they need undercoating or something else, I can always do it later.

One of these large plugs will be needed for the right panel. The rubber plug in my original panel fractured like a piece of hard candy when I went to remove it.

rubbertherightway.com looks like a car parts site. I dont see these items offered in any T-bird catalogs.
