    RE: THANX ALEXANDER!

That Y-block was in a magazine about a decade ago. It looked so ood. The article said it was "all original". I wrote the magazine a letter pointing out the incorrect engine installation. They printed it.

      Not Looking Good

      So Fuz....

5750068 in the crossover section (MPC) gave a service part number B8A 9510-F. I am assuming you chased the PN down in the application chart and it only showed installation in the FORD (A) line but no mention of the BIRD (S) line? Is there any mention of any type other than 4100 in the BIRD (S) application chart? If not, it is a conclusion the entire engine is incorrect as the solid engine was not an option but a forerunner of the hydraulic engine. It had to be discontinued before the car's scheduled assembly date. Also, Casting I.D. Nos. of NOV would not have been held for that late of an assembly.

        RE: Date Codes

I can't thank all of you enough for all of this top notch research... The only history I have on the car is that it is exactly in the same configuration since 1967 (the year I got my first "squarebird"). The previous owner did not know the difference between solid lifters and peanut butter.
I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that it is 99.99% certain the engine does not belong in this car. However, it does seem to have some mystery attached.. I suppose it could be a very desirable engine to the right person. Hopefully we still might find information on original application. I just want a proper 352 for my bird.
This adds a whole new dimen$ion to this restoration.. I did plan to rebuild ... but not buy and rebuild. OK guys... this is where you all jump in with witty phrases of consolement.. or that some eccentric millionaire has been looking for one of these engines for the past 20 years.

          RE: Date Codes

          Frank,

I am leaning to your view that the engine is not origional installation. Just the Chassis Build Date and engine component casting dates clash terribly.

I posted this question on the FE FORUM where the most knowledgeable regarding the FE congregate.

It seems very little is known (unless it is in some research texts) concerning the early 352 as it had such a short life. This (or E-BAY) will be the most logical places to advertise it if you want to sell it.

Now we must concentrate on hopefully finding the correct components to make the restoration correct. Somebody has to have an early 352 laying around somewheres.

Once again I must say how impressed I am with the great and friendly responses I have received from so many to my dilemma. @ KULTULZ I appreciate the post in the FE forum, thank you, maybe someone there has more info or some interest in this engine. I'm going under this weekend to get some tranny numbers to see if this was a complete transplant, or just engine (bell housing has 7A dates also). If I have to buy an engine to rebuild it sure is going to change some financial scheduling. Kinda put a damper on my little project..... but I am determined to bring this little baby back to form. It looks like it's just going to take longer. ;-)

              RE: Date Codes

Hey guys, sorry to be late to the party. I have been very busy lately and it is only getting worse. My little time on the web has been devoted to threads I was already involved in or ones that did not require references as part of what is making me busy is a honey-do list that involved packing up and moving a lot of stuff to reorganize MY play room into HER craft room. The engine in question is indeed an early 58 352 solid lifter engine as used for about the first 90 days of production and is far too early for the car in question. You need to understand that there were not warehouses of engines waiting to be used but that engines were actually built and shipped on a weekly basis so at most an engine could be anywhere from 30-90 days from assembly date of the car depending on where the car was built (Dearborn cars have really close dates as the engines were made there and LA cars have long lead times based on shipping the engines across country. Because Wixom built so few 352 cars (Tbirds only) they did not stock a huge amount of engines and so the date codes tend to be very close to assembly date of the car. The engine is also solid lifter which would not likely end up at Wixom as they did not use them (some plants used more than one style engine assembly and it is possible that the wrong one was pulled but at Wixom you only had 4 engines available, domestic and export 352 and 430). The carb is indeed a stock 58 carb and can be looked up under part number B8A 9510-F, EDT 9510-D, or 5750068 (Ford used three different part number systems in 1958!) and was only used on the 58 352 used in standard Ford cars such as the Fairlane or Custom. The engine was probably replaced very early in the cars life for it to be as complete as it is because as time went on parts have a way of being seperated and the fact that the original carb is still there indicates that the engine did not see much use in its original application. The engine is somewhat rare and there may be some people who would be looking for an assembly like that for a restoration but truth be told most 58 Ford owners are not that detail oriented and would not pay a premium. The cylinder heads are likely valuable to the general public as they are likely machined chamber heads that are very popular with the performance crowd (although stock they are nothing to crow about, they are an excellent basis for modification, proper porting and big valves makes them great heads). You are quite welcome Frank.

                  The following may help you find the I.D. Nos. off your trans;

I've been thinking. You might want to consider keeping the present 352 and maybe changing to the correct carb and later rocker covers to make it appear as origional. I don't know how far you want to go with the restoration, but this engine will allow you to power it until you can maybe find the correct period engine. Just save all the take-offs.

It will surely outrun any 352 BIRD out there...

                  Something to consider...

I would never try a full restoration as they would have to put me in the loonie bin...

                      RE: Engine Identification

Hello J Bird here is the plate info for my car. I found a site that gave me the info on the vin, just curious about the data tag info. Spec. the color and time codes.

                      63A V XH 09H 4 1

                      VIN H8YH130775

Old big bird is getting closer to being on the road all the time. I am now only down to installing the pwr booster, master, hardlines and bleeding the brakes and she should be good to go.

When you mount the booster, could you take a photo of it, once mounted, with M/C and the remote reservoir please?

I need to see a live installation to get an idea how it operates and how much room it takes up.

                        THANX! ;-)

Thanks for the tranny ID info.... Thats a keeper! I will get at those numbers this weekend and then I'll know if this was a complete transplant (I already suspect it is). I do believe I will take your (and others) advice and if I can't find a date proper engine by the time I'm ready for it, I'll run this little baby... It would be more sellable running anyway (?) <--- I would imagine.
Once more, thanks for all the help and support. I'll post the tranny #'s as soon as I can.

                              Frank,

If it were mine (and I can only wish here), I would keep this early engine and if desired find the correct carb and rocker covers (if they are different). Finding a numbers correct engine this late in the game may prove difficult. This will give you power until you can maybe find the correct casting/date codes to make it correct.

Maybe look in HEMMINGS to see if there is anything available. May have to but it piece by piece.

Yes, I can shoot some photos of the booster install. I put the mounting plate we fabed up on the car last night. I'm not sure I am doing what you are thinking tho. I don't have a remote resivor. I am using a two chamber power booster and two chamber master cynl with an adj prop valve. It is a universal setup, at least that is what I was told. Really it is almost the same thing I am running on my 68 olds, but nicer, was tempted to use this setup on the olds.

It is not nos or factory ford style stuff at all.
