Has anyone ever installed one of these in there car? It is a alternator in the shape of a generator that uses all the orginal brackets.

RE: PowerGen
That's cool. A friend of mine had an idea for making alternators that look like generators. He mentioned it to me a year ago. This shows the time is ripe for such an idea.

It is expensive, but I will consider it next time my genrator is failing. It is better than needing to replace batteries frequently or getting stuck. I do a lot of short city driving. Generators don't work well in this situation.

I certainly agree with that. The origional GEN was not up to the task when built. Add a hot ignition, big radio and turn the A/C up and you will see why.
Also, POWERMASTER is not the junk you buy at PEP BOYS, but is a quality built product and you have to pay for that. This product is for someone doing a dedicated restoration where origional appearance is paramount.

RE: PowerGen
I am sure it is a nice piece of equipment, but I can't bring myself to spend that much money on an alternator. Everyone has a different opinion about such things...and we all know what opinions are worth - ha!
I bought an alternator for my '64 Chevy truck a while back for $35. It has a LIFETIME replacement warranty and works perfectly. Granted, it isn't trying to look like a generator and it ain't all shiny, but it does the job.
I think the high price is more a reflection of the uniqueness of the part and assembly (and lack of competing products) rather than the innards or working ability. The technology for alternators hasn't changed so drastically as to make one alternator over 10 times the cost of another - except for the unique qualities mentioned above.
I still have my original (I think) generator on my Bird and do a lot of town driving. I haven't noticed any problems yet (knock on wood).
I guess if I had a lot of money and was interested in a really complete restoration as you said; perhaps this would appeal to me. I just don't have that sort of scratch.
