    Original AM Radio Questions

This past weekend we re-installed my original radio and amplifier. We have checked and there is power to the radio, however the radio does not work. I have an extra radio and amplifier from some parts swapping. Is it more common for a radio to go bad or the amplifier or is there a way to test which is bad before I remove or install? Please let me know any insights you have other than just putting in a aftermarket radio or having the guts replaced in mine. I would like to keep it original equipment if possible. Thanks, Dan 60 Hardtop

    RE: Original AM Radio Questions

Aside from checking the wiring and speaker, as a first step you might try replacing all the tubes in the radio with NOS ones. There are only 4 tubes, if my memory is correct. You can order them on line from several radio tube vendors. If you get absolutely nothing at that point then the amplifier becomes suspect and ought to be replaced (I am told by radio people that the components in the amp are pretty hard to replace or find so if it is bad you hunt down another one on Ebay). The speakers often need replacement but ought to make some noise for you if the rest is working. the antennae needs to be checked for grounding as what were once bare metal places may have gotten painted over in time.

Acquiring a spare amp on Ebay is not a bad idea in any event. They rarely go for much money and usually work.
