flexible coupling aka rag joint removal

whats the best way to remove a rag joint on a 63 tbird? Mine is sheared and needs to be replaced. I'm stuck right now trying to get the two halfs off their respective shafts. Theres just no clearance without removing the steering column shaft back. all I need is an inch or so. Is there a way to move the steering shaft back without removing the entire column?

I succeeded in removing the rag joint by removing the three bolts that hold the steering gearbox and moving the gearbox aside. Whew!
