I am glad to be with this group today. Ihave a 1962 ford thunderbird convertible with only52000 miles on it. How difficult to change over and what would be the benifits in doing so.Or should I just keep everything original your comments. Thanks Larry

First of all, welcome to Squarebirds! If I can be of assistance in navigating our Forums, please PM or email me.

As for swapping out the generator for an alternator, I did it on my '59. It is a matter of preference. If it is your desire to stay all or as original as possible, then don't do it. If it is your desire to put in something that is a safety improvement or overall improvement in the way the car works, then go for it. I was not liking the way my generator was working so I went the alternator route.

I changed out my generator for an alternator because the Squarebirds generator leave a lot to be desired, in my opinion. My mechanic had to modify my bracket to get the alternator mounted. You might have to also.

There is a company that manufactures mounting brackets for alternators for these Tbirds. Unfortunately, that URL was on my Mac and it crashed on me last week, never to be used again with that hard drive. I was told yesterday that it impossible to recover any data off that hard drive. So I am going to have to do some checking or maybe one of the guys here can tell you what company that was. If I find it, I will follow this up with the information.

I am not sure this is the company I was thinking of, but they do sell alternator mounts if you decide to go that route. One of the guys on here probably knows the name of the other companies that also provide mounts.
