Prior to a discussion with John Rotella of Tbird Registry fame this morning, I only knew of one Squarebird that existed with a removable hardtop. That is the Silver '58 Squarebird that has been around for years. After our newest Squarebirds Forum user, Tim ODonnell joined us, we now know there is a very well done '60 Squarebird with a removable hardtop. That information regarding it can be found in the 1958-1960 Squarebirds Forum at http://squarebirds.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=21217
Here are the two other '58 Squarebirds with removable hardtops, a Black one with a white top that I did not know about, and that Silver '58 Squarebird that I did know about but just had two pix of it. I do not know if the modifications for strengthening the body was done to these two Tbirds or not. Thanks to John Rotella and his Tbird Registry we now know more about these two. Here is what he sent me. First the black one!
RN 29620 H8YH106903 This 1958 Thunderbird Hardtop is black with a white roof and a red and white interior. It is powered by the 352 engine backed with the automatic transmission and has power steering and brakes. It has a hard top that is removable. It has been in an auto museum for the last 12 years. As of December 2, 2005 it is in Deer Lodge, Montana and is listed on eBay. UPDATE Dennis Dole reports as of March 2015 it was offered for sale in Riverton, UT.
Now the Platinum '58 that I have known about for quite a few years.
RN 712 H8YH108059 a 1958 Thunderbird Hardtop in Platinum (O) with a black interior (XC). It has power windows, power steering, and Cruise-O-Matic Drive. This Thunderbird has been customized in a unique manner: the hard top lifts off. A stock 1958 Thunderbird Convertible soft top, power mechanism, rear deck lid and body parts have been installed to mimic a 1958 Thunderbird Convertible. This Thunderbird is truly two body styles in one: a Hardtop and a Convertible. The owner states that it has 25,000 original miles. It was known to be in Gainesville, Georgia as of September, 2002. It was sold at Scottsdale by B-J in 2004. - UPDATE June 2016, Cody Burch reports it is for sale at Corvette Mike's in Anaheim, California. (picture update, extra picture added)
Here are the pix that John sent me.
