Default Large Case vs. Med. Case Trans?

A friend has 60 TB with the Lincoln 430 motor. Took the car in to a trans shop for rebuild and they said he has the Med. case trans. Is this normal or should it be the large case? Also, would it be beneficial to get a large case trans and have it rebuilt vs. rebuilding the medium case?

I think you would be better off with the Large Case, but lets see what others have to say. Here is some information you might want to look into.

According to the Ford Car Parts listing, Section A70, Page 329, a 1960 Squarebird with a 430CI engine should have a COM 3-Speed tranny in it, Model PBB-M Tpe MX, (Heavy Duty) Part # PBB 7000-M, or a PBB-AF, Type MX, Part # C0SP 7000-B. Further information, check out the Technical Resource Library (TRL) the link to which is always part of my signature element.

I'm just making an educated guess, but I think the large case was for pickup trucks. I'm not so sure it would fit in your Bird.

As I remember this, the Large Case is for the 430MEL COM, but hopefully, one of our more technically erudite members will school us on this.... I seem to remember that the Medium case has problems handling the COM on a 430MEL equipped Tbird and can crack the case.

Our full size Galaxie came with a small case (and it works just fine.) My experience is, the small case actually holds together better because the cast iron center brace doesn't span as far (making it stronger).

If strength is really an issue, get a C6. End of story.

Ray is correct about the PBB (Large Case Cruise O Matic) being for the 59 & 60 Thunderbird equipped with the 430. The large case was also used with the Lincoln and Mercury 430s. It is a physically larger unit built to handle the added HP and torque of the 430. The TRL is an excellent reference as to the size difference and ID of this rare transmission.
