Default Power steering leaking, pump belt removal.

My power steering system seems to leak oil very quickly, though with a full cup of fluid the system operates well.

I do not have the resources to repair the system currently and have since removed the belt for the pump, so that it will not turn with no fluid inside.

Any consequences to that?

It will be difficult to steer at slow speeds. It will put some strain on the steering components, since the idler arm on power-steering car only has rubber bushings, not lubricated bearings like the non-power-steering cars.

Rebuilt power-steering pumps are not very expensive. Or you can try to get a better used one. These pumps are very durable.

I really wish i could tell for certain where it is leaking at but it just seems as though there is so much fluid leaking it is difficult to find the place of origin. I would say all the hoses need replaced to begin with at least. Will any 64-73 Mustang power steering components work that you know of?

The Eaton power steering pumps are the same in the 1965 V8 and 6 cylinder Mustangs, though the brackets are different, but these can be unbolted and exchanged with the brackets your pump has. The hoses do not interchange. In fact, the power steering hoses for the 1958-60 Thunderbird vary in each year.

Default Just ordered rebuild kits

I just ordered the rebuild kit for mine. not to sure of the price because I ordered the rebuild kit for the control valve also but I believe it was $15.00 and shipping was $6.00, and if you have ever done any mechanical work, or the desire to, then with the shop manual it is not that hard of a job.

Check out the links page for the vendors I have used a few of them and so far I have had good luck with all. but cost for parts do vary considerably so you have to do a cost comparison before you order. I found the kit for the power cylinder from a non listed auto parts place for half the cost as these vendors, so shop around if you have the time. and good luck in your ventures

Oh and welcome from the 6TB1RD
