Default Steering questions?

Adjusting steering on my 1960 following manual.
Section 9-1, paragraph #11
1. How do you know if you got ball nut centered-hate to guess that my 2-3/4 turns is as exact as their 2-3/4 turns.
2.The pics show 5 teeth on sector gear and 2 teeth on ball nut. Is centered when 3rd tooth of sector gear is between the 2 tooth of ball nut?
3. Do you need to take cover plate off to see this?
4. Is torque measure by turning sector shaft with torque wrench?
5. What lube do you put in steering box

Steering gear. Hmmm, scary. Never dug into one of those. Years ago a company called Straight Line Power Steering her in San Jose rebuilt mine. I'm pretty sure (since these are really just a manual strg/gear) that they just run straight 90 wt gear oil.

I have adjusted the worm gear to get rid of "some" play. I just loosned the lk/nut and gave it a 1/4 turn. It worked good.

PLEASE Don't over tighting that. You can destroy the gears. I've seen this done on inspections in the 50s and 60s The rest of the front end has to be almost (and i repeat almost) perfect
Before you start turning those screws.

When I did the gear box tightening, I remove the pitman arm. I then turned the steering wheel end to end and found the center.

Follow the instructions in the shop manual.

Use a torque inch-pound wrench when doing the procedure. when you tighten the small screw on top of the gear box. Pretend that your hand is broken or you will overtighten it; permanently flattening the ball guide returns.
