Default Engine coolant - freezing point check

Hello guys, as my radiator is presently leaking, I've been adding destiled water to the circuit several times. I guess, I watered the mixture down a bit and I need to prevent it from freezing this winter. Is there an easy way to get a sample of coolant from the BLOCK to measure it's quality? Neither from the radiator nor from the expansion because I filled the expansion with the concentrated antifreeze and drove several miles. The weather was very cold though and I'm not sure if the antifreeze mixed into the block through the thermostat which might have stayed closed.

I suppose that you could remove the temperature sender on top of the intake manifold. But if the level is higher in your overflow tank that will make for some spillage. You might find it far easier then to just start the engine and let it warm up to cycle. Not a bad idea to do that once/ month during winter storage anyway, along with putting in gear, rolling it out a car length and back again.

Like he said, I would let the engine warm enough for the thermostat to open and all the coolant to mix throughout the engine. then test it. Better safe than sorry. I've only cracked one block in my life, but that was definitely enough to know more antifreeze is better.

I get the impression that he cannot start the engine.

I would drain the radiator as much as possible. Then I would add straight antifreeze just over the water pump level so the expansion tank is very low (nearly dry). You could remove the belts and simply spin the water pump (and fan) by hand to help mix coolant between the engine and radiator.

Let's get a little creative here... You could use one of the belts on a drill motor chuck to turn the water pump. Removing the thermostat would help but I don't think it makes much difference because there is a bypass tube around it. You will see new antifreeze as the expansion tank concentration changes. - Dave
