Here's what your air cleaner should look like. A lot of times they get replaced with a later one.

It does look like yours is bent down a little bit. I had one that was the same way. Even on perfect ones I remember the air filter sticking up about 1/8 inch so that the lid doesn't sit flat. It's been awhile since I had a '64.

I'll just have to tweak it a bit then. Time to get out some flooring boards, some threaded rod, washers and bolts.

I tell you, everything on this car seems to fight to get restored. So many little things seems to escalate into a PITA. For instance, the long alternator bolt seized in the alternator casting. When I turned it it would actually twist the steel bolt. I didn't have a press so I hammered it out. Every movement it got harder. On my last blow with the bolt almost out, the casting broke.

It's a battle that I will win though.

That's why I have to laugh at these so called "reality shows" where they restore a car in a week. I've spent longer than that getting one rusty bolt out.

I wonder how many of those restorations break down 5 miles down the road.

A thick metal plat, a short piece of 3/4" hardwood, a small pry bar and the air cleaner is tweaked and the filter fits perfectly.
