help needed - hood release

hi!

On my '58, lately the hood will come unhooked on the passenger side easily while driving (bump in the road). Drivers side is fine.

Nothing has been changed on the car . So I guess either something needs lubrication or something is out of adjustment. Any suggestions? I am aware of the cable between the two sides as a possibility.

I know I read a setup procedure somewhere. It basically said to install the cable assembly to the driver's side latch, then adjust the RH latch with the short cable. If I remember correctly, the adjustments are all at the LH latch. Perhaps yours is too tight. They should both release at the same time. Don't forget to lube the latches. - Dave

A good starting point would be to clean and lubricate the latches. The drivers latch has the main release cable attached and then also has a second cable connected going to the pass. side latch. If nothing was touched, and it used to work okay, the cross over cable could be getting sticky causing the pass. latch to not fully lock in place. Some guys have added a return spring on the pass. latch to make sure the cable pulls back all the way to allow the mechanism to latch. Adding a small spring to help pull the crossover cable all the way back may solve your problem.

It seems like on every Squarebird I've owned I usually have to slam the passenger side down pretty hard to get it to stay closed without popping back up at some point. I've tried adjusting cables and the lock mechanism and have never been able to find a good solution.

thanks , guys! I will work on it and report back as to what worked. Had the car 12 years now and this mechanism has always worked flawlessly. My suspicion is dirt and lack of lubrication in the cable are involved.
