Tbird Rims

This question was just sent to me. I am not sure I know the answer, but I think Tbird rims have always been black in color from the get go.. If anyone knows the answer, please post...

Aren't the 1960 stock TB wheels black in color ? When did the TB's start going to a black wheel ?

Ray - the red wheel question comes up often - I think because one of the major restoration books shows red wheels - don't recall which one.

Pretty sure all the factory brochures with pictures of Tbirds show black but the odd one could be out there - I don't have all the brochures .

I can say for sure that as of August 1960 the factory wheels were black because I have the original wheels for my car which was purchased new at the dealer by my Dad and Mom.

Thanks, Eric. When I bought my '59 it also had black rims on it. I just checked the 1958-1960 OFS, and according to it, 1958-1960 OEM rims were black. I also get the impression from it, that this carried on into the 1961-1963 Bulletbirds.

Lance Harrington, of Tbirds Southwest tells me that 1955-1957 Tbird OEM rims were color coded to the same color as the body paint was...

In many of these pix with Babybirds with what appears to be OEM rims/wheel covers, you will see many of them with matching rims to the body paint.

Although some publicity photos showed white wheels I'm pretty sure all squarebird wheels were painted semi-gloss black.
