Mission Impossible: Repro dash pad install on a '58 dash frame
To get around the sun glare on your dash pad, some have put down a black (or other color) cover that fits in place on top of the dash. They are available out there. When not driving, you can just take it off and put it away.

Thanks Richard, the ENTIRE interior is white except for the carpet. I have toyed with idea of dying it royal blue and putting highlights in the seats like the same colour piping and blue part panels in the doors, but like a lot of things just havent got around to it yet!
We dont have access to dash pads over here in Oz Ray, and I actually dont like them anyway. I will dress it up oneday...soon as I get some spare time!sigpicBill

I got a call from the upholstery guy yesterday. He said he could not get my dashpad to go on without a wrinkle forming.
I went to his shop and looked at what he had done. He had slid the whole dash on like in a 1960 and there was indeed a small wrinkle showing on the top of the dash.
At that point I knew that I could probably do a better job with it than he could, so I told him I would finish the job.
I took it home and followed all the directions and tips that this forum had to give. What a pain in the rear that job was.
However I got it done and it looks fine, except of course it does not fit all the way forward as other have stated. That does not bother me though I think no one except a T-Bird expert would even notice.
I did find one trick that helped me a lot and I have not seen it posted elsewhere, so I will share it. I was having trouble getting the 3M weatherstriping glue to hold and the vinyl is stiff when you try and bend it around the metal brackets. I found that using a hair dryer to apply heat it not only made the vinyl easier to work with, it made the 3M glue stick immediately. Sort of like a hot glue gun.
Anyway, the new dash is on and now all I have to do is reinstall it. Thanks for all the help you guys give here.Comment

Yeah, man..... its a real devil, that's for sure.
Since the earlier Square's are in the minority, I'd say it isn't ever gonna change for the better.
I'm just glad someone is out there making the reproduction dashes at all. There are alot of other cars out there that dont have the parts available like we do.
If the gap at the front annoys me enough.... someday I will fabricate something. Right now though, I think I'm probably the only one who notices that tiny "defect".Comment

Yup, Greg! She is looking great! I know you have to be happy that is behind you, except for some clean up! Congratulations!

I never realized that the 58-59 had visible metal underneath. It's a good solution to support the foam.
When Grandpa got my '60 in the late 70's, the full vinyl/foam dash had dried, cracked and dropped to the point that you couldn't get the glove box open. Dried foam was falling out all over. He had the dash replaced shortly after, so it looks pretty good now. Back then you could still get them in colors, I think, instead of all black like they are now.Comment

The first dash I bought was red. It was also about $67.00 wholesale. Those were the days.John Pizzi - Squarebirds Administrator
