I hope I have learned.My car started to backfire and run rich.Sooted plugs and exhaust stinking of petrol.The backfire blew my driver-side muffler apart.It would not idle and would stall, so realistically became undriveable.I went through the route of dismantling the carburetor,cleaning the components and blowing the passages out.Then I realised via web-browsing....a clogged air filter.Now a $6 component has given me back my smooth running V8
The good points are that I enjoy dismantling an Autolite, and that I now have the correct air-filter(the clogged item did not have the wider rim on the top surface so may not have been sealing as well as it should)
The clogged air-filter was a new item circa 3000 miles ago.Presumably having the oil breather diverting back into the air cleaner silencer makes filter replacement a more frequent requirement
