Do you have a picture of your heater core. Replacing the internal valve with an engine compartment valve usually involves modifying the heater core so it has two fixed pipes.

That's actually cheaper than some I've seen. If I go with an external valve, where do I get one that will work with the existing linkage? I just don't know where to start or the proper valve to buy.Comment

The external valves are pretty much generic. You can get them just about anywhere. Here's one from Summit.

Installing an external valve almost always involves getting a longer cable so it can reach into the engine compartment. Sometimes you can get the stock cable to reach. Most likely you will have to drill a hole in the firewall for the cable to come through.

A third alternative is just to bypass the heater core altogether. Since you're in San Diego heat doesn't seem to be much of a priority. That's certainly the cheapest option.

I didn't know that was an option. How do I bypass the heater core? Just a hose from the intake to water pump?Comment

Clamp the bypassed heater hose so coolant doesn't flow.Member, Sons of the American Revolution

I've had my heater bypassed for a couple of years due to a leaky control valve (coolant in the passenger footwell). I'd like to fix it before fall to extend my driving season a bit. I thought the T'bird vendors sold T'bird specific replacements that went in the engine bay, is that not so?Comment
-
Yes, they sell TBird kits to mount in the engine bay but not specifically for his Sunliner.

I guess I should pay better attention to what sub-forum things are posted in.
I generally pull up the "latest posts" and go through them, I sometimes miss that they aren't in the Squarebird area now that we've got so many new areas.
Sorry about the confusion.Comment
