    carburetor ID

I just came across this on EBay item # 320108364502
advertised as a rebuilt from a '58........... carb ID tag has number
C5AF AV A LA my ford parts book only goes up to 1959 but doesn't the C5 mean 1965?

That carburetor is a 4100, but you are right it is not from a 1958 Thunderbird. It is probably from 1965 or thereabouts. The tag may be from another carb, only the numbers on the carb itself can positively identify it.

Several things about it make it not a 1958 carburetor:
    1. The gas inlet is short. 1958 and 1959 carburetors have long snouts.
    2. The accelerator pump casting is short. The 1958-1960 pump casting is longer and has a screw on the top.
    3. 1958-1959 choke flaps have a second spring loaded flap insert. 1960 - 1961 carburetors have a series of holes along the trailing edge of the choke flap. (The 1958-59 choke flap is the best design but most expensive, so that is why it was eliminated.)
    4. The hook on the choke thermostat housing was added in the mid-sixties.
This carburetor will work on a 1958 Thunderbird, but is not 100 percent correct.

      1959 Thunderbird 4100 Carburetor

This is a 1959 4100 carburetor for the 352 engine. The 1958 version is nearly identical.

thanks for the quick response and all the info...I often get a chuckle over some of the claims I've seen on EBay. I just knew this one couldn't be right.
In your '59 picture you say it is "nearly" identical to the '58..... different numbers?

eBay listings are notoriously inaccurate. I lucked out and bought last year a 1959 T-Bird carburetor, that was listed as a 1960. I though it was the correct one by the picture. I was pleasantly surprised when I received it that it was exactly the right carburetor.

The ID numbers stamped on the 1959 carburetor are 5752308 or 5752309. The number is stamped on the left front bowl ahead of the "1.12" marking for the size of the venturis. The numbers are listed in the 1959 shop manual under "specifications."

The 1958 shop manual does not list the numbers of the 1958 carburetor. The jetting for the primary is the same as the 5752308, though the secondary is different.

I bet Fuz knows the ID number for the 1958 4100.

              Carb ID 1958

I am in Miss. right now so access to info is sp****. Will post when I get home, but remember that the side is either marked EDT or EDC. Unfortunately the memory is a bit fuzzy.
I have also seen a 6 digit starting with 575. Still researching the 58's as info is really sp****.

                Thanks Fuzz,
My '58 engine is not from a 'Bird so I have no numbers to go by.
Now what are you doing in Miss.?????
