    Defroster Switch

On my '59, the defroster lever has always been a little stiff. I was slowly working it on & off when something "gave way". It now moves from on to off with little or no resistance, so I'm assuming it has either broken the cable or the cable has come adrift from the lever.
I'm not sure where to start checking as I don't know where the cable goes to from the lever.
    My questions are:
What is the easiest way to check what the problem is??
Can I get to the problem area without removing the centre console etc??
What does the defrost cable attach to??

    Thanks Guys

To check the cable just remove the forward portion of the console that goes around the heater control. You don't have to remove the entire console. There are a couple of possibilities; The cable may have broken or it just may have popped off of the lever. The cable connects to the heater plenum and opens and closes the doors directing air either to the floor or to the defroster openings.

Here's a pic of what is behind the center console once you remove the upper piece. If I recall correctly, the defroster door is directly behind the control piece with the levers. The metal cables are held in place and adjusted with a small bracket compressing the outer sheath to hold it in place. If one of these brackets comes loose, it would give the same symptoms you described.

the flapper valve lever on the center of the plenum (for either windshield defrost or floor heat selection) can also be seen in this photo:

          Thanks Fellas
It was just the cable popped off the lever. Easy fix.
Thanks again for your info & pics
          Cheers
